ABC's of Creatively Homeschooling: B is for Buttons

I think every house has one. "One what" you ask? Why a button box of course! I remember as a kid I loved going through my gramzy's button box and looking at all the different kinds she had in there!

I've come up with a handful of ways that buttons can be used in creative ways. Here we go with my top 5.

1. Use them as eyes for animals, snowmen, people, puppets etc. One way we have used them was for our snowman ornaments this past December. You can find the directions for them here.

2. Embellishments for flowers, mugs, mittens and more! Spoonful crafts has some great ideas you can find here  I love the idea of decorating a mug with buttons to give as a gift! How fun (and maybe a bit messy) would that be?

3. Use them to sort, organize, categorize or for sensory play for toddlers! Use an egg carton and have your little ones organize them by color, shape or an other way they come up with.

4. Play games with them. We've used our buttons as BINGO markers, pawns for home made printable games and any others that may be missing a piece. Simply find one that matches your color and you're all set!

5. Teach with them. For toddlers (with bigger buttons) and preschoolers buttons are a great way to work on color recognition, shape recognition and counting. Older children can practice counting by twos or fours.

What else have you done with Buttons?

  1. good idea to use them as Bingo markers! Can you believe that we do NOT have a jar of buttons? I'm going to be keeping an eye out at yard sales this summer to get some buttons.

  2. My mom had a jar, not a box, but your point is valid. I think every home has one! Or at least, they used to.

  3. Stopping by from the A-to-Z blog. Love your blog idea. Congratulations on joining the challenge. You will be even more creative by the time you finish!

P.S. I have a can of buttons. Most of them are extra buttons that came with clothing.

  5. What a wonderful idea you have with buttons. I used buttons to make some design in greeting cards, to do some school projects!
