S is for Salt; How to Make Salt Crystals

I'm falling rather behind on finishing by the end of the month but we'll get there! There's LOTS of things you can do with salt including experiments and art projects. I want to share just one of them today. A few weeks ago my daughter and I started making salt crystals and it has been a lot of fun to watch the progression.

Our Jar and pencil after a couple weeks

Here's how you can make your own salt crystals.

What You Need

  • 2 cups of water
  • Salt 1 Tablespoon at a time until it no longer dissolves
  • Mason jar
  • pencil
  • string
  • paper cliip
Process
  1. Bring water to a boil
  2. Add salt one tablespoon at a time until it no longer dissolves.
  3. Pour water into mason jar
  4. Cut string just senought to it and have it reach the bottom of the jar.
  5. Attach a paper clip to the bottom of the string
  6. Set pencil on top of jar with string and paper clip hanging down to the bottom of the jar.
  7. Set it in a windowsill where it won't be disturbed.
  8. Wait and see what happens!

Have you ever made salt crystals?
